Jack Templar Monster Hunter by Jeff Gunhus
Jack Templar Monster Hunter: The Templar Chronicles tells the story of Jack beginning the day before his fourteenth birthday. He awakens to find himself stronger, faster, and seemingly improved in many mysterious ways. He knows nothing of his coming of age as a much-anticipated monster hunter beginning on his fourteenth birthday.
Jack himself narrates his tale and carefully inserts many warnings to the reader about monsters coming for those who become enlightened by reading the book. “Once a monster hunter, always a monster hunter,” he says.
Instead of portraying Jack as a wondrous hero, bursting with courage, Gunhus creates a character that is achingly human. Jack has moments of extreme cowardice joined with times of bravery, understanding, and sadness. Jack Templar is a hero for the masses.
This is a book that is appropriate for the whole family and is great fun. Not only is it well-written, it grabs the reader from the first sentence and doesn’t let go. Ever.
